Psychoeducation is where psychotherapy begins
I'm Sherry Jerimie, a psychoanalyst in private practice for more than twenty years. Across that time I arrived at a conviction that now organizes everything I build: healing begins not with intervention, but with understanding. Psychoeducation, helping a person actually see the pattern, and grasp why we as human beings do what we do, is not a preliminary to the work. In my experience it is the ground the work stands on. Therapy that skips it tends to be quietly sabotaged from the start: it treats the symptom while the person remains a stranger to themselves.
What I have observed, consistently, is that the people who move furthest are the ones who arrive with genuine psychological insight, not intellectualization, which is a defense wearing understanding's clothes, but true self-knowledge, the kind that lets you catch your own patterns in the act. Insight isn't the reward at the end of therapy. It's the floor you build it on.
